Vanessa Garcia is originally from Toledo, Ohio and moved to Texas at a very early age. She studied at The University of Texas at San Antonio where she received her BFA in 2007 and is also pursuing a Teaching Certification in the Arts.

Vanessa Garcia explores family relationships through the execution of abstract, cotton and canvas cloth, wood, embroidered, and bronze sculptures. Her work investigates ideas that are very real to humanity as a whole, such as relationships and family secrets that impact our lives. Though not overtly feminine, her work deals with femininity and expectations of women.  She also looks into women’s roles as mother, sister, daughter, wife, mistress, etc.

Vanessa’s influences are Eva Hesse, Richard Tuttle (early works, dyed canvases,) and Louise Bourgeois.   “My work stems from who I am – a woman, a mother, and a daughter of a tailor and a seamstress.”
